The screen is very simple and there are no instructions. You type the word or words you’re looking for in the box, and then you can specify where the program should search in the list next to the “Search” button. In principle, “throughout the text”, but also “according to keywords” or “images”. Of course, these are the names of the images, not the content. The authors say that the search engine read 165,000 HTML pages from the Slovenian Internet in its collection of words.

Note: Many Slovenian authors have their websites on foreign servers, which means at foreign addresses. TOBI does not read or take these into account!

Using Alternate Patterns The only additional option I discovered on the TOBI search engine is the use of alternate patterns. Those natives who have worked with personal computers since the time of the DOS operating system are well aware that they can replace any number of characters with an asterisk. Take a look at this search: Mih

In this case, Yahoo would return all words that start with those three letters, and TOBI does not – it only returns hits where “Mih” is the whole word. So if you want to search for any word that starts with “Mih”, be it “Miha”, “Mihov”, “Mihelič” or something fourth, type an asterisk after the initial: Mih*

However, you can use an asterisk at the end of each word when searching for multiple words at once: Miha* Mazzin*
