International museum day

As part of the events marking the International Museum Day, the public was informed about the launch of the Slovenian museum portal Museums. The International Museum Day, which took place on the theme of Museums – Bridges between Cultures, was marked by Slovenian museums with an open day.

Museums have organized special workshops and events on the central theme of International Museum Day, which is celebrated around the world on 18 May. The main event in Slovenia was at the Slovenian Ethnographic Museum, where the Slovenian ICOM committee is also based.

On this occasion, they presented the new Icom Code of Museum Ethics, the booklet Pedagogical Programs in Slovenian Museums and Galleries 2005–2007 and the new Slovenian Museum Portal.

From ancient cultures to the present
Workshops, guided tours of exhibitions and a cultural recital took place in the National Gallery throughout the day, and the day was also marked by the presentation of a collection of exhibition posters from the founding of the gallery until today. Among other things, the City Museum of Ljubljana organized an Archeopeskovnik workshop for the youngest, where children look for many objects reminiscent of ancient times and mysterious cultures during the game. The Taiwanese film Missing by director Lee Kang Sheng was shown for free at the Kinodvor.
The Holocaust exhibition was opened in the Ptuj Regional Museum, and the Tolmin bridgehead exhibition was opened in the Tolmin museum, on the occasion of the 90th anniversary of the fighting on the Isonzo Front.

How an exhibition is created? The process of setting up the exhibition was presented at the Maribor Regional Museum, and the curator and technical staff were available to curious visitors to answer questions and present their work at the setting of the exhibition Glass Trail – Heritage of Pohorje Glass. The Maribor Art Gallery has prepared a workshop on the topic of designing a print on a T-shirt in the screen printing technique, which is intended for visitors of all ages.

Activities for children
In the program of the Regional Museum Murska Sobota, it is worth mentioning the museum dance workshop entitled Sar pa khiles tu? or How do you dance?, where elementary school students could learn about Roma dance. Younger visitors to the museums were also remembered at the Božidar Jakac Gallery in Kostanjevica na Krki, where children could attend a workshop and see an exhibition by Urša Toman, whose sculptural work also touches on children’s fairy tale literature. The youngest were also remembered in the City Museum of Idrija, where they prepared a workshop on the production of archaeological jewelry, and in the Loka Museum in Škofja Loka with a pottery workshop, which took place in the morning.

International Museum Day was proclaimed in 1977 by ICOM with the aim of raising public awareness of the active role of museums in society, interdisciplinary and interinstitutional cooperation, and various forms of partnerships and exchanges.
