Slovenian bibliography – a mirror of the nation’s creativity
At the end of October, the National and University Library in Ljubljana published the Slovenian Bibliography of Books on a CD and presented it to the public. This has brought it closer to users, as PCs with multimedia capabilities are becoming more common. Slovenian bibliography has been published since 1945.
Eight years ago, the so called computer on-line mutual catalog (COBIB), in which more than a hundred Slovenian libraries participate was created. The mentioned compact disk is now based on the data stored in COBIB. In addition to the printed bibliography and the so called on-line accessible catalog the compact disk is the first bibliographic database in our country. It (replaces six rather thick books) contains sixteen thousand bibliographic records of books after the year 1989. It includes works by Slovenian publishers, as well as works by Slovenian writers published abroad.
In the National and University Library, the compact disk will be supplemented with new data three times a year: Bibliographic data on books is described according to the adapted international Comarc system, and can be viewed on a personal computer in the Windows environment. The software allows you to search in different ways. It is not necessary to know all the information about the book, it is enough if we know the author’s surname, it can also be individual words from the title, subject code, collection name, year of publication, publishing house, language, etc. A component of the software is also a built-in manual that explains the use of the program, and at the same time guides us in our search for data. The Slovenian bibliography on a CD is intended not only for libraries and librarians, but also for all those who want to get acquainted with book creativity. The easy use and the amount of data will impress any user.
